Sonajhuri Haat travel guide: Shopping, baul music and local food experiences

Sonajhuri Haat is one of the most quaint weekend destinations for travellers near Shantiniketan in West Bengal. Unlike regular markets inside a city building, this is a village setup with small fairs. The outdoor haat is set near the Khoai region, where local artisans, singers and food sellers are spotted. The place is known for handmade items, the classical “baul” music, local snacks and a relaxed rural setting. Shonajhuri Haat is popularly called the Khoai Mela and is commonly linked with Saturday afternoon visits.

While planning for a short Santiniketan trip, travellers should check transport, stay location and consider booking hotels online in advance. Weekends can be busy, especially during winter and holiday seasons, hence it is best to pre-plan the getaway.

    Why Sonajhuri Haat feels different?

Sonajhuri Haat is not just restricted to shopping but also creates a peaceful mood for visitors. The market has stalls with handmade jewellery, bags, kantha work, dokra-style jewellery pieces, home décor, clothes and small souvenirs. Most of these items are made by local artisans, making these products more personalised to acquire.

My favourite way to experience Sonajhuri Haat was not to start shopping immediately. First, start with a slow walk through the shaded paths, listen to the baul songs from a distance, and then return to the stalls that genuinely caught your attention. This makes the haat less about shopping and more about a cultural trail.

What to shop at Sonajhuri Haat?

While visiting Sonajhuri, travellers can expect to find a handful of locally produced items, handmade goods and handicraft products. Try to look for items that are easy to carry and useful for gifting.

Some of the popular items at the Sonajhuri Haat include:

    • Handmade jewellery
    • Kantha work bags
    • Cotton kurtas and stoles
    • Terracotta items
    • Dokra-style décor
    • Hand-painted souvenirs
    • Local artwork
    • Jute bags
    • Wooden crafts

It is important to compare two or three stalls before buying. Many items may look similar, but the stitching, finish and material quality can differ.

    Indulge in soulful Baul music

Baul music is one of the main reasons people visit Sonajhuri Haat in the evenings. Baul singers perform with simple instruments and soulful songs in the middle of the haat, inviting visitors to join. The music gives the place its local character and a joyful ambience.

    Try local food

Sonajhuri Haat is also known for its local food stalls, where travellers can try simple village snacks. Depending on availability, visitors can also find items like ghugni, pithe, muri mixtures, tea, sweets and other Bengali snacks. However, these food options are mainly seasonal, depending on the tourist crowd and the time of the year.

Visitors are required to carry some cash, as smaller stalls may not have access to digital payment systems. Additionally, keep water with you, especially during summer afternoons when the heat can get intense.

    Best time to visit Sonajhuri

Winter is the peak time to visit Sonajhuri Haat. The weather is comparatively cooler, and walking around the open market becomes easier. Afternoon to early evening is usually a good time, as you can avoid the crowd while browsing through handicraft products. However, visitors must check with the locals for the best timings before travelling.

While visiting Sonajhuri, it is important to keep a few extra hours in hand. A good Sonajhuri Haat plan needs to include time for shopping, music, food, a short walk and a few peaceful moments amidst the scenic surroundings.

    Travel tips for first-time visitors

Here are some quick tips for first-time visitors to Sonajhuri Haat:

    • Wear comfortable footwear as you have to walk a stretch.
    • Carry cash in small notes and change to buy snacks and small souvenirs.
    • Keep a cloth bag for shopping, as many stalls might not have bags for delivering the products.
    • Ask prices politely before buying or bargaining.
    • Avoid heavy bargaining with artisans, as the prices are fair and affordable.
    • Visit before sunset for a better experience, with dusk being the best time.
    • Keep the area clean and avoid plastic waste for a sustainable trip.
